1. Sew Sow

Exploring Materiality and Sustainability through Beeswax Vessels

Driven by the desire to allow individuals to become sculptors of their own environment, I transition technical materials to home-based ones, crafting biodegradable beeswax vessels for food preservation. These vessels invite interaction, which allows users to fold them, hang them, and manipulate their form. This act of making extends beyond the physical creation process; it becomes an engaging experience, creating a unique visual form. Made from discarded garments, begging for a new life, these vessels embody a larger discourse on sustainability.
The broad intention of this project is to address the issue of food waste on a personal level by promoting a deeper connection to our food sources. As a product, the features include being watertight, flat-packable, and compostable.

The objects take on a quirky, yet functional quality through the juxtaposition of ephemeral, light materials with rigid textures. This marriage of elements not only enhances their aesthetic appeal but also speaks to their practicality. Beeswax coatings, renowned for their ability to extend the shelf life of certain produce, play a pivotal role in this functionality. By creating a natural, antimicrobial barrier, they effectively preserve moisture and prevent spoilage, thus prolonging the freshness of fruits and vegetables. This dual function not only reduces food waste but also allows consumers to savour produce for an extended period, showcasing how nature-inspired solutions can manifest as tangible, everyday benefits.

In collaboration with my classmates, Dena Smith, and Sam McInnis

The client wanted a semi-permanent platform to be located on their property in Lilloet. We were to equip the platform with furniture, a kitchen, and an outdoor shower. After establishing the layout and design language, we subdivided into a group of three people to create the furniture. This is our flexible dining set, featuring four removable lounge chairs to enjoy fireside or to be taken into nature.

“An accessibility device for breastfeeding”

Giving birth is perhaps the biggest challenge that a person faces in their lifetime. The philosophy of the cradle arm is rooted in the idea that the post birth period should be a time of relaxation and recovery. Cradle arm allows for the mother to remain close to the newborn as well as physically interact with their child while maintaining physical autonomy.
This device has two modes, the cradle mode allows the baby to rest next to the mother in their own cradle. In the second mode, the user brings the device to their chest and rotates it towards them to aid in breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can be a challenging new skill to learn, and often requires two hands to get the baby to “latch”.

Specifications:

The mattress cover is the first point of contact for the baby’s skin. The cotton cover provides a soft surface for the infant. The cover is easily removeable and machine washable. The foam mattress pad is covered with vegan leather to ensure an easily wipeable surface for sanitation. The cradle is made from curved baltic birch plywood. The clear stain finish is non-toxic and creates a smooth, wipeable surface. The articulating gas spring arm ensures seamless transition between positions. The cradle easily unscrews from the arm for transport. An adjustable clamp attaches to a variety of surfaces.

The goal of this project was to design an aesthetically intriguing structure that could serve as inclusive architecture within the built environment. The concept is straightforward: buildings with unused exterior space could mount these collapsible structures, providing temporary shelter for those in need. Once the user is finished, the structure neatly folds back into the wall.

This functional tableware has been slip casted from 3D printed forms, initially modelled using rhino software. Inspired by the Memphis design movement, and my childhood toys, I intend to incite nostalgia and create endorphin inducing work which is playful, yet practical. The rings are spice shakers, and can be stacked onto the vessels. The clown vessel is a karafe, while the orange vessel is a vase.

Backyard Studio

This backyard studio or office space is designed to maintain a close relationship with nature. It frames its surrounding environment using an open veranda which is home to two sliding glass doors and four skylights within the diamond shaped roof. The concave shape of the roof is also designed to accommodate rainwater catchment at the backside of the structure.
